Finalist: Dr Tebogo Mashifana

Senior Lecture - University of Johannesburg. Professional Engineering Technologist.


Dr Tebogo Mashifana is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg in the Department of Chemical Engineering Technology. She has completed both her Bachelors and Masters Degree with Cum-laude. She holds a PhD degree in Civil Engineering obtained at the age of 30, an MBA degree obtained at 31 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education. She is registered as a Professional Engineering Technologist with the Engineering Council of South Africa.

Dr Mashifana has been featured in the list of Mail&Guardian 200 Young South Africans 2019 and the list for the 2019 Top 100 Young Independent in SADC, she is also a finalist for 2019 Gauteng Women Excellence Awards under the category Young Women Achiever of the Year. Dr Tebogo is a Golden Key International Honour Society Honorary member. She serves as Institutional Advisory Board Convenor: Africa Cooperatives Institute of South Africa.


She is a Lead for Publication Portfolio: Young Water Professional (Gauteng). She is a committee member for South African Global Change Science and she serves in a number of committees within her institution. Dr Mashifana is a Goodwill Global Ambassador, an advocate for education and she is the founding member of Dr Tebogo Mashifana and Partners Foundation, a Non-Profit organisation focusing on community upliftment projects and empowering young people.



She devotes her time to mentor others, encouraging young girls and women to pursue careers in STEM and empowering them through skill transfer and human capacity development. She is a self-motivated, goal orientated and driven and an individual who believes in lifting and empowering other younger people, through the knowledge she has acquired, and experiences gained over time. Her research area is in wastewater treatment and solid wastes beneficiation. She has great interest in developing sustainable, cost effective, environmental friendly and applicable solutions to convert waste materials to value-added products.
